Melbourne Precincts
The City of Melbourne has 15 distinct ‘Precincts’, small pockets of the city with their own unique character, colour and charm.
Like London’s West End or New York’s Times Square, each precinct has a recognisable identity. Some are small, just a lane or two, while others will transport you to another world in just a few streets. You’ll find public art where you least expect it, café society reminiscent of Europe and a treasure trove of surprises awaiting your discovery.
Melbourne’s precincts offer culture, intrigue, romance and excitement, from the narrowest laneways to Melbourne’s marvelous waterfront.
Crisscross the City Precincts on a tram and see them all, or spend the day exploring just one in detail, you will uncover something new and exciting that will stay with you forever. Visit www.thatsmelbourne.com for more information.
Melbourne is set around the shores of Port Phillip Bay. The city itself is laid out in a large rectangle and boasting a lively and cosmopolitan pulse Melbourne sits on the northern banks of the Yarra River, about five kilometres from the bay.
CBD: One glance at a map and it’s obvious that Melbourne is a planned city: a tidy, balanced grid of neatly angled streets. The CBD is made up of precincts – distinct enclaves each with its own flavour and charm. Some are just a lane or two, while others cover the banks of the Yarra River or a busy CBD street. An easy city centre to navigate and something for everyone at each intersection.
City fringe: Extending around the bay are a number of inner suburbs, each with its own distinct character and personality. A short tram ride in a range of directions from the city centre, places you in Melbourne’s suburban neighbourhoods which are a must see for anyone wanting to explore Melbourne’s famous shopping outlets and restaurants. If you want to experience life in Melbourne, then it is all accessible, by foot, tram, train or taxi. Visit www.visitvictoria.com for more information
